Royal Caribbean's Symphony of the Seas slips to the fourth position this year, having been the biggest cruise ship in the world from 2018 to 2022. Arvia is the second Excel class cruise ship for British-based P&O Cruises. The vessel is slightly larger than its sister ship Iona and was constructed at the popular Meyer Werft shipyard in Papenburg, Germany. She is currently the largest in the P&O fleet and is the largest ever constructed vessel purposely for the British market. Costa Toscana is the second Excel class vessel built for Carnival-owned Costa Cruises. The only reason she is lower than her sister ship in the largest cruise ships in the world is that she entered service in 2021.

On November 27, 2023, Royal Caribbean’s Icon of the Seas was officially delivered from the Meyer Turku shipyard in Finland to Royal Caribbean. This means that the cruise line takes over responsibility for the giant ship, and the vessel officially becomes a part of the fleet. It now means that Icon of the Seas is the world’s largest cruise ship, overtaking Wonder of the Seas, which is also operated by the same cruise line. The history of cruise ships dates back to the 19th century and over time the capacity, technology, luxury, and speed of cruise ships has been improving exponentially.

If all goes as planned, the record-breaking vessel will begin sailing in the Caribbean in January 2024. Both ships offer 13 pools and hot tubs, nearly a dozen restaurants and just under 20 bars and lounges. There are 1,550 balcony rooms on each, providing plenty of options for the roughly 6,500 passengers that can sail at full capacity.
Kids will love the Altitude zone that features a ropes course, mini-golf, and more. It features many of the same components of other ships in the class, like the adults-only Solarium, Central Park, and the AquaTheater. The cruise ship is currently scheduled to sail out of Miami, Florida through at least May 2026 sailing four different itineraries to the Caribbean.

But close quarters enable outbreaks, so sanitation regulations at sea are stringent. Every part of the ship, from lift buttons to the casino’s chips, are sanitised daily; interior materials have to stand up to the high level of chlorination from the constant cleaning. Rubbish is frozen in vast storage containers to slow bacteria growth and is only removed in port. In June 2023, the ship hit a major milestone when it completed its first sea trials outside the shipyard in Turku, Finland. Next up is the colossal new ship’s first voyage, slated to depart on January 27, 2024. It will sail roundtrip from Miami to the Caribbean islands of St. Kitts, St. Thomas, and the Bahamas.
